Oral Discussion
Oral Discussion allows students to learn and share in a variety of ideas while exploring and examining what they have already learned. Oral discussion is
much more than the teacher asking a "what" question and having the students answer in a specific way. The idea is that students will be able to assume
ownership for their learning and take control of their own ideas. By using Oral Discussion students will also be able to participate in Reciprocal Influence.
Reciprocal Influence is "students learn not only from the teacher, but from each other." Students must also speak, observe and listen thoughtfully to what is
being said around them. By showing that they can be mutually responsive while listening and speaking, the students are participating in Reciprocal Influence. There are some key ingredients that teachers must use when facilitating an oral discussion. Teachers must make sure that students feel comfortable in the classroom environment. By feeling comfortable in their environment and with teachers valuing their opinions, students will be able to get a full understanding of the discussion.
Phases for Discussion:
1. Identify the focus for discussion
2. Pose the question for discussion
3. Foster participation
4. Summarize the student's positions
